England's cricketers have set New Zealand an unlikely target of 553 in the deciding third Test.

The Middlesex left-hander added four singles to his overnight 173 before he was caught by Matthew Bell.

Ian Bell added 110 in the second innings and England declared at 467 for seven after half an hour of play.

New Zealand openers Matthew Bell and Jamie How had guided the Kiwis to 48 for no wicket by lunch, with Bell hitting seven boundaries to raise hopes of a competitive innings.

New Zealand won the first test by 189 runs and England the second by 126 runs.
