Mr Bush is backing a power-sharing deal in Kenya to end the violence that has claimed 1,000 lives since a disputed election in December.

He said he had discussed "not what we should do to dictate the process but what America can do to help the process move along".

The president also handed over a £698 million grant to help improve roads, electricity and water supplies in Tanzania.

Mr Kikwete said thousands of people in Tanzania owed their lives to American aid programmes that fight malaria and AIDS.
