Prescott released from hospital

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has been discharged from hospital after being treated for pneumonia.

The 69-year-old - who had been taken ill on a train from Hull to the capital was admitted to University College Hospital in central London last Saturday.

The outgoing Deputy Prime Minister thanked all of the medical staff that had assisted him and said: "We should all be very proud of our magnificent NHS."

A spokesman said that Mr Prescott's health would continue to be monitored by hospital staff but he was not sure when the Deputy Prime Minster would return to work.

Prescott is due to quit office alongside Prime Minister Tony Blair on June 27.
