Government: 'No plans to ban Rottweilers'
The Government says it has no plans to add Rottweilers to the list of banned dogs after a baby boy died following an attack.
Archie-Lee Andrew Hirst, who celebrated his first birthday in November, was snatched from the arms of a seven-year-old girl in Wakefield who was carrying him at into the garden on Friday afternoon.
He suffered serious injuries and was taken to Pinderfields General Infirmary, but later died.
The Kennel Club pinned some of the blame for continuing attacks on "poorly-drafted" legislation brought in speedily in reaction to a spate of horror stories about "devil dogs" attacking children in the 1980s.
But club secretary Caroline Kisko resisted calls to include Rottweilers on the list of banned dogs. She said: "Another hasty decision will do nothing to address the real issues of responsible dog ownership. A responsible dog owner knows that you never leave a dog and a child, especially an infant, alone and unattended."
A spokeswoman for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said: "We have not received any representations from the police (who enforce the legislation) that such dogs should be added to the list."
