A train derailment has triggered an explosion in northeast Ohio.

Several carriages came off the track in Painesville as it headed to Buffalo, New York.

Despite the large smoky blaze no injuries were reported.

According to local police, people in a half-mile area were told to evacuate.

One eye-witness said he heard an explosion around noon Wednesday and then saw a white flash, followed by flames shooting into the air.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said the carriages were loaded with alcohol products.

Firefighters said they were able to control the fire quickly, though they initially held back on using water, given the train's cargo.
