"That may be where this is headed, but we have to decide who is on the top of the ticket," Mrs Clinton said.

The former First Lady is still in the fight to become the Democrats' choice of presidential candidate after scoring victories over Barack Obama in Ohio and Texas.

Mr Obama has promised to be more aggressive in his campaign and says he will attack her claims that she has more experience in dealing with foreign policy.

Senator John McCain will take on whoever wins the Democrat endorsement in the presidential election in November.

He clinched the Republican nomination after passing the 1,191 delegate threshold with victories in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The victories drove the 71-year-old's last major rival, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, out of the race.

President George W Bush endorsed his former rival, saying: "He's going to be the president who will bring determination to defeat an enemy and a heart big enough to love those who hurt."
