Pavarotti's health 'worsens'

Opera singer Luciano Pavarotti's health has seriously deteriorated, according to reports.

The 71-year-old was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and he spent two weeks in hospital last month for tests and treatment.

He was discharged on August 25 and returned home.

A spokesman for the hospital where he was treated refused to comment.

Pavarotti became an international household name in 1990 when his performance of Nessun Dorma from Puccini's Turandot, was adopted as the theme for the World Cup.

He went on to perform with Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo in a high-profile concert in Rome on the night before the World Cup final.

The recording of the concert became the biggest-selling classical record of all time.

He also sang with U2 on the song Miss Sarajevo.
