Mexicans head for World Cup
Three Mexican bakers have won a baking play-off in Toluca to book their ticket to the Bakery World Cup in France next year.
In their efforts to win the prize, the bakers added a touch of Mexican flavour to their breads, adding hot chilies, huitlacoche (a fungus), and corn to their traditional recipe.
Chefs from France, Spain and Sweden then tested the bread, evaluating its colour, texture, and taste in order to chose a winner.
Josue Olvera, Armando Velasquez and Gary Salazar were the eventual winners and will participate in the Bakery World Cup, against bakers from France, Japan, United States and other six countries, in Paris next year.
As part of their winning entry they presented sculptures made out of bread, one representing Quetzalcoatl (an Aztec god with the form of a feathered serpent) and another depicting an Aztec warrior.
