Papers have also been filed against a number of television channels for broadcasting footage of Gere kissing Shetty on the cheek repeatedly.

If the reports ring true and the stars are found guilty then the pair could face heavy fines - although on rare occasions, the punishment has included imprisonment.

The incident caused angry scenes in several Indian cities with crowds burning effigies of Gere and chanting "Down with Shilpa Shetty".
