Newcastle's woes continue
Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear faces an uphill struggle after the Magpies lost against Blackburn.
The club chose Kinnear as their interim manager until the end of October after former England boss Terry Venables turned down the job following Kevin Keegan's departure earlier this month.
The 2-1 defeat to Rovers is their fourth in a row, although there was late fightback after a Michael Owen penalty gave Newcastle a lifeline in the 48th minute.
Elsewhere in the Barclays Premier League, Daniel Cousin grabbed the winner for Hull to end Arsenal's unbeaten run at the Emirates Stadium and mark Arsene Wenger's 12th anniversary at the club with a shock defeat.
Cristiano Ronaldo continued his triumphant return from injury to when he scored the opener for Manchester United in a 2-0 win over Bolton.
Substitute Wayne Rooney also found the net for the first time this season.
Jose Bosingwa put in a match-winning display for Chelsea as they moved to the top of the table on goal difference with a 2-0 win over Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.
West Ham continued their winning ways under new manager Gianfranco Zola with a 2-1 victory over ten-man Fulham.
Ashley Young scored twice from free-kicks to cement Aston Villa's place in the top four of the Barclays Premier League with a 2-1 win over Sunderland.
And West Brom claimed their first away win this season after beating Middlesbrough 1-0.
In the Scottish Premier League, Celtic came from behind to beat Aberdeen 3-2, with Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink's sealing victory with a 90th-minute strike at Parkhead.
