A psychologist has named June 20 the happiest day of the year after creating a formula for fun.

Cliff Arnall, a former tutor at Cardiff University, came up with an equation that takes into account the effect of the weather, the prospect of a holiday, childhood memories, lighter evenings, being outdoors and socialising on people's moods.

He was commissioned by Walls Ice Cream to carry out the study, and also calculated the most depressing day of the year - normally around the end of January.
