Depp to play Mad Hatter?

Johnny Depp will star as The Mad Hatter in the new Alice in Wonderland film, it has been reported.

Director Tim Burton has a habit of casting Depp, who has starred in six of his films, including Edward Scissorhands in 1990, Sweeney Todd and Ed Wood.

Alice in Wonderland was written in 1865 by Lewis Carol.

In 1951, Disney produced the animated film Alice In Wonderland and it is said Burton's new version will be shot in 3D.

Alice will be played by Australian teenager Mia Wasikowska.

The film is set to be released in the summer of 2010, with production starting next year.
