Two other soldiers were injured in the same incident last night. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

At 9.10pm local time on Friday night they were patrolling in the central area of Helmand province when the vehicle rolled over.

A medical incident response team was called in and took the casualties to facilities at Camp Bastion.

A spokesman said: "Sadly, despite the best efforts of the medical team, one soldier died of his wounds. The vehicle had been part of a patrol conducting force protection when the incident occurred."

The spokesman added: "The soldiers' next of kin have been informed and have requested a 24-hour period of grace before further details are released."

The death takes the number of British service personnel who have lost their lives since the start of operations in Afghanistan in November 2001 to 109.
