Gerrard has fractured toe
Steven Gerrard has suffered a hairline fracture of the toe but he will play for Liverpool against Chelsea on Sunday.
A scan has revealed the extent of the injury Gerrard picked up while playing in a Champions League qualifier against Toulouse and he has been ruled out of England's friendly against Germany.
But Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is keen to field his star player against one of the club's biggest rivals for the Premier League title.
Benitez said: "He will then need one or two weeks' rest.
"He will train but he will not be able to join up with England. I will talk to Steve McClaren and I am sure he will understand.
"We have been told by our doctors that this is not a big risk but he will clearly then need to rest after the Chelsea match."
