A parachutist and a spectator have been killed in a freak accident at a French football stadium.

The parachutist was killed when he struck a pylon as he was trying to land in, while the teenage spectator died after being flung against a barrier by the torn parachute.

The parachutist had been carrying the ball for a friendly between the French and Ukrainian Under-18 teams

The parachutist had been blown off course while trying to land in the Saint-Denis-de-l'Hotel stadium, 93 miles south of Paris.

He had been carrying the ball for a friendly between the French and Ukrainian Under-18 teams.

His torn parachute carried off two teenage spectators, who were severely injured when they struck a metal barrier around the pitch. One died in hospital on Friday and the other is still in serious condition.

The match was cancelled and police spokeswoman Nelly Rodrigues said an inquiry had been launched.
