Britain is gearing up for another windy night in the wake of snowstorms and gales that have been battering the country.

Severe weather warnings are in place for most of Scotland, with predictions of further heavy rain and snow overnight Saturday and into Sunday.

Much of the country has been returning to some sense of normality after devastating winds and snowstorms on Friday brought chaos to the roads and power supplies.

Of the 45,000 homes which lost power across the north east, North Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire, just 14 remained without electricity on Saturday night.

In Scotland, temperatures had risen from freezing lows overnight to around 4C in central parts.

While there has been no repeat of Friday's travel chaos in the Highlands, police have urged motorists to exercise caution as road conditions remain icy.

Forecaster Brendan Jones said: "Today was the last of the chilly days for a little while. There is milder air coming in from the west and it has already been raining in the west of the UK.

"As that rain comes across, it will fall as snow for a while, but will become rain.

"There will be rain moving into the west, moving east and reaching London by tomorrow evening," he said.
