Theatregoers have been in for a bloodsoaking at the opening of Evil Dead: The Musical in Seoul.

Based on the 1980s horror movie about five students who accidentally become zombies, the musical's actors spray at least five litres of fake blood on the audience at every show.

Audience members in the 43-seater "splatter zone" are provided with raincoats to protect themselves from the fake blood made from corn syrup.

Yoon Dong-suk, 28, said: "I dressed in white on purpose because I heard there would be bloody showers at the musical. I expected feeling something chilly, but it was rather fun because of those actors' funny performances. I'm showered in blood now and this blood tastes sweet."

Producer Song Han-saem said the splatter gimmick has been used before in overseas productions, but added that this is the first time it has been used for the stage in South Korea.

He said: "Blood is used as an unfavourable material in movies or on the stage, but our production exposes blood to bring laughter and joy to the audience."
