And it was a big night for US teenage star Miley Cyrus, who took home trophies for both favourite female singer and favourite TV actress.

Actor Will Smith and rappers Ice Cube and Akon all brought their children to the event.

The show's host, actor Jack Black, announced that 88 million votes were cast for this year's winners on the Nickelodeon website.

R&B singer Chris Brown collected a gong for favourite male singer, thanking his record label, his mom and "all the ladies".

The singer squashed rumours that he is dating pop princess Rihanna - who also turned up for the awards ceremony - insisting they are just friends.

He said: "We have an understanding that we are just friends. It's not any deeper than that. It's not a relationship. You know what I am saying? It's about being friends and just hanging out."
