Jude Law's latest film My Blueberry Nights has opened the Cannes Film Festival.

The British heart-throb was one of the first A-listers to arrive on the red carpet with co-star Norah Jones, who made her acting debut as a waitress that travels across to US and ends up meeting Law, who plays a cafe owner.

In the Wong Kar Wai-directed film, the pair share a steamy on-screen kiss which has set tongues wagging.

Asked about the "sexy" smooch scene, the singer said: "The kiss was the moment that Kar Wai had the most direction about.

"He was so excited when we did that scene. He knew exactly what he wanted and we shot it for a long time."

Other stars expected in Cannes include Ocean's 13 stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and Matt Damon, as well as Quentin Tarantino, Michael Moore, Martin Scorsese and U2's Bono.

This year's judging panel is led by The Queen director Stephen Frears and 22 films are in competition for the Palme d'Or - the highest prize given at the event.

The festival, in its 60th year, lasts until May 27.
