Over 100 celebrities attended an awards ceremony in central London to celebrate the achievements of Britain's unsung heroes.

Pop starlets the Sugababes, model Kelly Brook and comedy duo Matt Lucas and David Walliams all hit the red carpet to meet the people who had performed an act of bravery.

Among those honoured at the star-studded event was Robert Dunn who saved his family from an attacker wielding an axe and Carol Miller, the air stewardess who delivered a premature baby 30,000 feet up.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling turned up to present an award to 15-year-old Megan Blunt who wrote a self-help guide to coping with cancer, after battling the disease herself.

But the writer was shocked when she was given a Special Recognition award for her charity work.

"It completely poleaxed me actually because I was so focused on giving Megan her award that I was really concentrating properly and then Emma Watson came out and that's what just about finished me off," she said.

Thousands of people put forward nominations which were whittled down by a panel of judges including Simon Cowell.

The awards will be broadcast at 9pm on October 10 on ITV1.
