Howard's injury-time strike left Liverpool's famous Kop in stunned silence - which was followed by jeers at the final whistle.

Liverpool had been on top for long spells and Dirk Kuyt put them ahead in the first half, with his first goal since December.

But defender Stephen Foster headed a 56th-minute equaliser for Barnsley, although on-loan goalkeeper Luke Steele was the real hero with a string of saves.

League One side Bristol Rovers also caused an upset by beating Championship side Southampton.

Darren Fletcher was Manchester United's unlikely hero as they secured their place in the quarter finals at the expense of ten-man Arsenal.

The Scotland midfielder marked his first start in two months by scoring a brace at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney and Nani were also on target against an Arsenal side, who had Emmanuel Eboue sent off.

Meanwhile Frank Lampard scored twice as holders Chelsea progressed with a 3-1 home win over League One Huddersfield Town.

In two all-Championship ties West Bromwich Albion thrashed Coventry City 5-0 away and Cardiff City beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0.
