Rooney winner pleases Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted to see Wayne Rooney score his first goal of the season as Manchester United beat AS Roma 1-0 in the Champions League at Old Trafford.
Rooney struck on 70 minutes to ensure the Red Devils went three points clear at the top of Group F after a burst of quick passing around the Roma box started by Nani.
The England striker only made his comeback from a broken metatarsal in the 1-0 win at Sporting Lisbon a fortnight ago and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is happy with his progress.
Ferguson said: "It was only his fourth match and he is still trying to get his rhythm and real match fitness, that happens when you only play a few games.
"But it will do him good, goals always do players good, particularly when goals are expected of them, so I'm pleased with that."
Roma, who were beaten 7-1 on their last visit to Old Trafford in April, could have taken something from the game but they spurned a string of chances before and after Rooney struck.
And a relieved Ferguson added: "I think we deserved that bit of luck because we played with good control, good football, good tactical awareness, so I was pleased with the performance... Luck happens in football, no question about that."
