Brand teams up with Britney

Russell Brand has teamed up with Britney Spears for a new ad to promote the MTV Video Music Awards.

The ad features the pair alongside an elephant who is 'comically ignored', US rapper LL Cool J and rocker Pete Wentz.

Brand will be hosting the awards which take place in Los Angeles on September 7

The elephant's presence is a reference to the phrase 'The elephant in the room' which is used when someone ignores an embarrassing personal fact about their companion.

A source said about the filming of the ad: "It was mostly ad-libbed, with Russell asking her for advice about hosting the show."

MTV have refused to comment as to whether the pop princess will be performing at this year's awards after her disastrous performance in 2007.

She has been nominated in the Best Female and Best Video categories for Piece of Me.

Brand will be hosting the awards which take place in Los Angeles on September 7.
