He would have broken into the top ten had he reached Sunday's final, but that honour instead has gone to his semi-final conqueror, Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

Murray's previous highest ATP Tour ranking was 13th and he will be looking to continue his amazing ascent with a good showing in this week's Miami Open.

Five-times Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg believes Murray has what it takes to be a Grand Slam winner, telling reporters: "Andy will definitely be in the top ten this year and in the future he is capable of being the number one player in the world.

"I like his attitude because he wants to be the best. Maybe all he has to improve is his physical and mental side but he doesn't really have any weaknesses. It will be great to see what he does at Wimbledon, and he has an unbelievable chance to win it in the next couple of years."
