Israeli soldiers have put around 30,000 Palestinians under curfew in the West Bank as they search houses and apartments for militants.

The troops have sealed off the centre of Nablus and are carrying out room by room searches in the city in a bid to locate seven Palestinian militants.

The operation is the largest Israeli raid in the West Bank in months, with about 80 jeeps, armoured vehicles and bulldozers being used

The operation is the largest Israeli raid in the West Bank in months, with about 80 jeeps, armoured vehicles and bulldozers moving around Nablus.

Members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent offshoot of the Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, are the apparent target of the raid.

Israeli officials said two explosives laboratories have been discovered.

Sporadic clashes have been reported as soldiers were pelted with stones and cement blocks, and exchanged fire with Palestinian gunmen.

Palestinian officials claim the operation is threatening moves to restart peace talks.
