One in ten women have spent at least £2,000 on a single item of clothing or an accessory, according to a new survey.

In Style magazine asked 3,792 women aged 20 to 40 about their shopping habits and found half shopped to cheer themselves up.

The average monthly spend on clothes and accessories was £170 although one in six admitted to splashing out £350 per month.

Two-thirds said they paid by cash or debit card, rather than using credit cards, and most were willing to make sacrifices to pay for new clothes.

More than half of those who responded said they shopped at least once a fortnight although two per cent said they only went shopping every six months.

Women said shopping trips left them feeling elated although nearly a third felt guilty for overspending.
