Actor Alec Baldwin has apologised for sending an angry voicemail to his daughter in which he called her "a rude, thoughtless little pig".

On his website, he blamed the outburst on the ongoing bitter custody battle with ex-wife Kim Basinger.

"I am most saddened that this was released to the media because of what it does to a child" - Alec Baldwin

Baldwin left the message after his daughter Ireland apparently missed a scheduled phone call.

He wrote: "Thank you to everyone who has posted messages of support and understanding. Naturally, it is not best for a parent to lose their temper with their child.

"Everyone who knows me privately knows that I have endured a great deal over the last several years in my custody litigation.

"Everyone who knows me privately knows that certain people will go to any lengths to embarrass me and to disrupt my relationship with my daughter."

He added: "Although I have been told by numerous people not to worry too much, as all parents lose their patience with their kids. I am most saddened that this was released to the media because of what it does to a child."

A celebrity website published the recorded message on and Baldwin's attorney has since filed court papers in an attempt to see how the tape was obtained.

Baldwin and Basinger married in 1993 and at one time were considered one of Hollywood's most glamorous couples. They divorced in 2002.
