The search came under the terms of Redmond O'Neal's probation for an earlier drug possession case related to carrying heroin and crystal meth while driving under the influence.

Police found methamphetamine in the father's bedroom as well as in his son's possession, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Both men were charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, and the son was also charged with lesser counts of possessing drug paraphernalia and illegal possession of pepper spray.

Felony drug possession carries a possible maximum sentence of three years in prison, but neither man is likely do any time behind bars if convicted.

Ryan O'Neal is best known for starring in 1970 film Love Story, for which he was nominated for an Oscar.

Redmond is his son from a relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett.

In a separate case, Ryan O'Neal was arrested last year on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm after firing a gunshot during an argument with another son, Griffin.

The actor told police that Griffin, 43, had picked up a fireplace poker and started swinging it. He said he fired a warning shot intended to scare his son. Both defendants are scheduled to be arraigned November 13 in Malibu.
