An Israeli man has died in a Hamas rocket attack as Prime Minister Ehud Olmert pledged a military crackdown on terrorists.

The rocket hit the town of Sderot killing the 36-year-old man - the second Israeli fatality in the recent surge of violence in the cross-border fighting.

Mr Olmert said there would be "unlimited" military action against Hamas and that "no one involved in terror" would be immune

The attack came just a day after an Israeli air strike killed five militants from the Islamist Hamas group in the Gaza Strip.

Mr Olmert said there would be "unlimited" military action against Hamas and that "no one involved in terror" would be immune.

He told his cabinet Israel should "be prepared for a long confrontation" and that he would not necessarily agree to halt fire if Hamas agree to a truce deal under negotiation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah group.

More than 220 rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza since May 15, the Israeli military said.

Over the same period more than 40 Palestinians, most of them militants, have been killed in Israeli aerial assaults.
