Martin O'Neill is looking to make further signings after wrapping up Zat Knight's £3.5 million move from Fulham to Aston Villa.

O'Neill told reporters after seeing his men book their place in the third round of the Carling Cup with a 5-0 win at Wrexham: "We are looking to strengthen the squad.

"We are looking to strengthen the squad... We think we are able to do so" - Martin O'Neill

"That is what we expect to do between now and Friday evening. We think we are able to do so."

Knight, who was born in nearby Solihull and is a lifelong Villa fan, will compete with Olof Mellberg, Martin Laursen and Gary Cahill for a place at the heart of Villa's defence.

O'Neill, who had been looking to sign Curtis Davies from West Bromwich Albion before turning his attention to Knight, said: "Zat has got a lot of natural talent.

"I'm hoping that if he performs the way he can perform and has done in the past, we can expect him to be a big asset."
