Steve Bruce appears willing to holds talks with Premier League strugglers Wigan Athletic over their managerial vacancy if Birmingham City give him permission.

That is according to sources close to the former Manchester United captain, whose future at St Andrews has been the subject of much speculation.

Birmingham's prospective new owner Carson Yeung has not sanctioned the new contract Bruce agreed with chairman David Gold and co-owner David Sullivan six months ago

Birmingham's prospective new owner Carson Yeung has not sanctioned the new contract Bruce agreed with chairman David Gold and co-owner David Sullivan six months ago.

The 46-year-old, who did spend six weeks in charge of the Latics in 2001, has spent the last six years in charge of the Blues but is in a state of limbo as regards his future in the Midlands.

Wigan, who find themselves one off the bottom of the table with just two league wins in their opening 13 games, are looking for a new boss after sacking Chris Hutchings last week.

Former boss Paul Jewell ruled himself out of the running earlier this week, leaving the likes of Bruce, Graeme Souness and Joe Royle to be linked with the vacant hotseat.
