BBC scraps environment special
Plans for an all-day TV special about climate change have been scrapped by the BBC.
Celebrities including Ricky Gervais were expected to take part in the event, which would have featured a mass "switch off by viewers to save energy.
Corporation executives said it is not the broadcaster's job to lead opinion.
Peter Horrocks, head of BBC TV news, said: "It is not the BBC's job to lead opinion or proselytise on this or any other subject."
However, a spokeswoman claimed the cancellation was not due to concerns over impartiality.
She said: "BBC One aims to bring a mass audience to contemporary and relevant issues and this includes the topic of climate change."
Environmentalists have accused the BBC of cowardice.
