Manchester United's hopes of signing Owen Hargreaves in the summer have received a boost but they will have to match Bayern Munich's valuation of the England midfielder.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been tracking Hargreaves for some time but the German giants have previously refused to sell him.

"If it is right that there is an offer of €25-30 million (£17-£20million) for Hargreaves, then I would seriously consider it" - Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer

Bayern have maintained that they wanted the England star to honour the four-year contract extension he put pen to paper last summer.

However, Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer has given the Red Devils hope that a deal could be done at the end of the current campaign.

Germany legend Beckenbauer told reporters: "If it is right that there is an offer of €25-30 million (£17-£20million) for Hargreaves, then I would seriously consider it.

"I think the board also think this way to satisfy the needs of the player."
