Boy dies after pond accident

A ten-year-old boy has died in hospital after being rescued from a pond at a beauty spot in Wigan.

Jordon Lyon, of Bluebell Avenue, Beech Hill, may have been trying to help a girl who was in difficulty from swimming in the hot weather.

Police were called to John Pit Pond at Standish Lower Ground just before 3.50pm on Thursday following reports that a boy had been spotted in the pond.

The youngster was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital and was later transferred to Pendlebury Children's Hospital, where he died.

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: "Officers arrived at the scene to find members of the public were in the process of rescuing the boy. He was not conscious or breathing, so police officers performed CPR on him.

The North West Air ambulance was called and arrived at the scene just before 4.05pm. The ten-year-old was taken to Preston Royal Infirmary by the air ambulance. He was later transferred to Pendlebury Children's Hospital but his condition deteriorated and he died at 4.10am."
