Iraqi bomber kills nine US troops
Nine US soldiers have been killed and 20 wounded when a suicide bomber targeted a military outpost north of Baghdad.
It is one of the worst attacks on US ground forces since the invasion in 2003. At least 85 American troops have been killed in Iraq this month, making April the deadliest since December, when 112 were killed.
The bombing took place near Baquba, capital of Diyala province. One civilian was also injured.
US military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Garver said: "We have seen a lot of recent attacks up in Diyala... that have been part of the fight for the province."
Tens of thousands of US and Iraqi troops have been deployed in Baghdad since February under a security crackdown. In return, insurgents are focusing attacks on provinces outside the capital.
Elsewhere in Baquba, gunmen wearing Iraqi army uniforms raided a neighbourhood in the volatile city, killing six people, wounding 15 and burning several homes, police said.
