Roger Federer beat Novak Djokovic 7-6 7-6 6-4 to claim his fourth successive US Open title.

The world number one came back from a break down in each of the first two sets to clinch victory and praised his Serbian opponent.

"He deserved better than that but he had a fantastic run" - Roger Federer

Federer said: "I think straight sets is a bit brutal for Novak to be honest.

"He deserved better than that but he had a fantastic run, not just at this tournament but the entire year.

"So congratulations, keep it up, he's going to have many more battles I think."

Djokovic has been tipped as a long-term rival for Federer but he will need to be more clinical if he is to push the Swiss.

Djokovic missed five set points in the first set and more in the second.

He said: "He showed that he's the best. He deserved to win. He was the better player."
