"This is the verdict of the real passionate British music fans" - Conor McNicholas

Meanwhile, Pete's band Babyshambles were beaten by Muse to the best band award.

And Muse's lead singer Matt Bellamy beat Pete in the sexiest man stakes.

Pete and Kate were supposed to present the godlike genius award to Primal Scream, but they had vanished when the time came.

Jamie T was the shock winner of the best solo artist award, beating Jarvis Cocker, Thom Yorke and Lily Allen.

Arctic Monkeys picked up best album for their debut Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and best DVD for Scummy Man.

Klaxons were best new band, Kasabian won best live band and The View claimed beast track for Wasted Little DJs.

My Chemical Romance won best international band while The Killers won best video for Bones.

NME editor Conor McNicholas said: "This is the verdict of the real passionate British music fans, the ones who keep the music scene alive at gigs up and down the country week-in and week-out.

"It's a reflection of how strong the British music scene is that there's so much to be celebrated.

"The NME Awards this year has been the biggest of the modern age with an unprecedented number of bands attending and with a line-up to rival most festivals. It's been a triumph for the bands and NME alike."

Lily Allen was named worst-dressed celebrity and Rudebox by Robbie Williams was chosen as worst album.
