The Bill wins award battle of the soaps

The Bill has beaten off competition from Coronation Street and Holby City to bag a Royal Television Society award.

The ITV1 police drama scooped the gong for Best Soap and Continuing Drama.

Comedy show The Mighty Boosh, picked up yet another honour after winning Best Situation Comedy and Comedy Drama.

One of its creators Noel Fielding said: "It's taken about ten years for people to get their heads around it, which we knew would happen, so it's a slow build.

"Its like building a watch, an elaborate sort of intricate watch, but we've done it now and they can tell the time."

The comedy show success continued for David Mitchell and Robert Webb, who bagged Best Comedy Performance for Peep Show.

And Harry Hill picked up Best Entertainment Performance for TV Burp.

Other winners included, journalist Andrew Marr who won awards for Best History Programme and Best Presenter for History of Modern Britain.

Top Gear walked away with the prize for Best Features and Lifestyle Series.
