Thorsten Engelmann will become the heaviest oarsman in Boat Race history when he lines up for Cambridge University against Oxford in their 153rd clash on the River Thames on Saturday.

The 25-year-old German Olympic representative tipped the scales at a massive 17st 6lb when the crews weighed in at London's Hurlingham Club.

And the Cambridge boat will be over 9lbs a man heavier as they bid to stop Oxford from winning for the third year in a row.

Cambridge President Tom James, who will occupy the number five seat, said he was "surprised" by the weight of his crew.

He said: "I didn't realise we had that heavy people in our boat. It's difficult to make a decision if the weight is an advantage. It can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the conditions."

James' opposite number Robin Ejsmond-Frey commented: "Being heavier is a mixed blessing. It means they have some heavier guys but they also have to carry that weight down a very long course. We knew Cambridge were going to be big guys. No surprises."
