Everton apply for Intertoto Cup

Everton have applied to play in the Intertoto Cup next summer, even though they could qualify for the Champions League.

David Moyes's team are currently fourth in the Premier League and if they are still there at the end of the season they will go into the Champions League.

"It would be remiss of us not to put our name forward" - Keith Wyness

But Tottenham's victory over Chelsea in the Carling Cup final on Sunday means one of the Premier League's three Uefa Cup places have been filled already.

Everton could still qualify for next season's Uefa Cup by winning the competition this season.

Everton chief executive Keith Wyness said: "Clearly European qualification through our league position or via the Uefa Cup is our main priority.

"However because of the deadline for Intertoto Cup applications, it would be remiss of us not to put our name forward."

Aston Villa, Blackburn and Manchester City have also applied but only one can enter the competition.

The Intertoto Cup offers a Uefa Cup place for 11 teams.
