New monitor to check unborn babies' health
Updated 20.44 Fri Nov 16 2007
British doctors have come up with a revolutionary new way to monitor the health of unborn babies.
Traditionally, a foetus with an irregular heartbeat could only be checked during the mother's visits to the hospital.
But a new device allows the baby's heart signals to be recorded 24 hours a day.
Once produced, the data from the monitor will be sent directly to doctors for analysis.
It means the mothers of babies at risk can carry on their normal lives, while being confident their child's health won't suffer.
The City Hospital in Nottingham has begun to fit pregnant women with the device.
