A tree has saved a 32-year-old man's life after he fell off a 100ft cliff at a holiday resort.

The man only suffered a leg injury when he landed in the tree around 50 feet down the cliff face at Hope's Nose, near Torquay in Devon.

The alarm was raised when he was spotted by a member of the public, a Brixham Coastguard spokesman said.

"Luckily he had landed in the roots of a tree," said the spokesman.

Coastguard teams from Berry Head and Torbay strapped the man into a stretcher and lowered him to the waiting Torbay inshore lifeboat.

He was then taken to Torbay Hospital by land ambulance for treatment.
