Racing legend in intensive care
Eleven-times champion jockey Lester Piggott is in intensive care in a hospital in Switzerland.
The 71-year-old, arguably the greatest rider the sport has ever known, has suffered a recurrence of a heart problem.
He spent five days in West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds in December after feeling unwell following his return from a trip to Hong Kong.
Pigott's son-in-law, Newmarket trainer William Haggas, said: "The latest news we have is that Lester is conscious and coherent."
Piggott, who retired from racing in 1994, claimed 4,493 victories during his glorious career in the saddle.
He is due to attend a special race day in his honour at Newmarket on Saturday.
Newmarket racecourse spokesman Alistair Haggis said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Lester and his family.
"Everyone in racing, especially in Newmarket, hopes he pulls through. It's very sad. He had been so looking forward to his big day on Saturday."
