Police in Mexico are investigating a car crash in which nine young children were killed.

The seven girls and two boys, aged three to eight, were going to their teacher's house for lunch when the SUV they were travelling in plunged into a canal outside the town of Cardenas in Guanajuato state.

It is likely some of the nine children were not wearing safety belts, as the car only had five seats

Victor Hugo Rodriguez, the local security director, said the children's 19-year-old teacher was driving.

Mr Rodriguez said she told him she lost control of the vehicle after one of the children pulled on the wheel.

He said it is likely some of the nine children were not wearing safety belts, as the car only had five seats.

The teacher, who was thrown from the car and swam to safety, suffered only minor injuries.
