Storm clouds are again gathering over the BBC with reports that up to 2,800 jobs could be axed in the latest round of cost-cutting.
Director general Mark Thompson is understood to be seeking budget cuts of 6 per cent in each of the next five years to make up a £2 billion shortfall between the licence fee settlement and the funds he had wanted.
Mr Thompson is expected to outline his plans to the BBC Trust on October 17

If the Trust approves his plans the workforce could be slashed by 12 per cent.
Union officials warned that industrial action was "inevitable" if the reported job cuts were approved.
