The latest British soldier to be killed in Iraq has been named as Private Craig Barber of 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh.

Pte Barber, 20, who was married with a young son, was taking part in a night operation in Basra Palace when he was killed by small arms fire.

"He was justifiably proud of the part he played in the platoon and wanted to do it to the very best of his ability" - Lieutenant Colonel JFP Swift

He joined the battalion in 2004 and was on his second tour of duty in Iraq.

His commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel JFP Swift MBE described him as "a dedicated soldier who was keen to deploy on operations in support of his mates".

"He was justifiably proud of the part he played in the platoon and wanted to do it to the very best of his ability. This was characteristic of a man who was very professional, courageous and who never wanted to let his comrades down," said Lt Col Swift.

"He loved practical jokes but was never malicious in their execution and never angry at being the victim of someone else's prank."

Defence Secretary Des Browne said: "Private Barber's death is terribly sad. He was a credit to The Royal Welsh and to our country.

"I would like to express my condolences to the family, the friends, and the colleagues of Private Barber. My thoughts are with them and as ever we will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time."
