Uefa probes tackle on Celtic star

Updated 11.45 Wed Nov 07 2007

Uefa is to probe the tackle from Benfica's Augustin Binya which forced Scott Brown to limp out of Celtic's 1-0 Group D Champions League win.

Swedish referee Martin Hansson showed Binya a straight red card for the shocking challenge with just five minutes remaining at Parkhead.

"(It's) shocking. I don't think the guy should ever have done that. He obviously tried to do me as hard as possible" - Scott Brown

And Bhoys midfielder Brown was left in no doubt that Binya attempted to break the leg: "Yes I think he did, but I want to fight another day. Hopefully Uefa will deal with it properly. The referee dealt with it very well and sent him off right away."

Binya is facing a minimum one-match ban and, because he was sent off, European football's governing body will automatically investigate the incident and decide later this month whether he should face further sanctions.

A spokesman for Uefa said: "We haven't received the reports of the referee or the match delegate yet but we always open a disciplinary case for a red card. This will be on the agenda of the next control and disciplinary body meeting on November 15.

"There will be at least a one-match ban but all red cards are judged individually so we will need to wait until the meeting to see if there will be a further ban."

When asked for his verdict having seen a TV reply of the incident, Brown replied: "(It's) shocking. I don't think the guy should ever have done that. He obviously tried to do me as hard as possible."

Aiden McGeady's sole strike right on the stroke of half-time saw Celtic record their second successive home victory and move up to third in the group.

And goalkeeper Artur Boruc believes McGeady has the potential to be better than Manchester United's Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

Boruc said: "Aiden was really unbelievable. He made so many great runs and was so important for our team.

"I think he can be better than Cristiano Ronaldo. That's my opinion. Aiden is still young and can only get better.

"I've played a few games against Ronaldo now and, while it's hard to compare the two players, Aiden has the ability to be better."
