Daryl Hannah believes biofuel production is vital for the US economy, despite claims that it's caused an increase in food prices.

The actress, who grows her own food and relies on renewable energy for her eco-farm in the Rocky Mountains, admits it's partly responsible for price rises in some cases, but believes "sustainable" biofuel will not damage food production.

In 2002, the 46-year-old went public with her eco-beliefs and began campaigning for the use of biofuel

She said: "We absolutely need biofuels to play a part in solving our energy crisis/demands, but it's essential to make them sustainably."

In 2002, the 46-year-old went public with her eco-beliefs and began campaigning for the use of biofuel.

She was arrested in 2006 after refusing to come out of a tree on a farm in central Los Angeles which was threatened by redevelopment.

In recent years, biofuels, such as ethanol and diesel, have been made from crops including corn, sugarcane and rapeseed.

Although it's been shown that biofuels reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuels, it's thought that if food crops are continually used, this may increase global prices.
