There were just 34 pandas born in the whole of last year and the three born on Monday bring the total to 13 so far this year.

Eryatou delivered a male baby at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Centre in Sichuan province after Jiaozi had already given birth to a male and a female at the same centre earlier in the day.

Eight of the pandas born this year were delivered at the Chengdu centre and the others were at the Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve.

There have been 180 pandas bred in captivity. Of the 34 pandas born by artificial insemination in 2006, 30 survived - both record figures.
