Villa face tough test

Aston Villa must be at their best for the entire 90 minutes if they are to end their Manchester United hoodoo in tonight's FA Cup third round clash, insists defensive stalwart Olof Mellberg.

Villa have a woeful record against United and were crushed 4-1 earlier this season after leading at Villa Park.

The Red Devils' only setback against Villa in the past 12 years was a Carling Cup defeat in 1999 when they fielded a virtual youth team.

Mellberg said: "We have really struggled against Manchester United in the past, especially in the FA Cup. I think this is the fourth time we played them in the competition since I came to the club and we've been beaten every time.

"It is time for Villa to have a cup run. We seem to get these tough draws but we are in good form now and hopefully we can get something out of the game."

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson expects a tough encounter against a side that is progressing well under manager Martin O'Neill.

United, however, are keen to go one better than last season when they finished runners-up to Chelsea.

Ferguson took in Villa's victory against Tottenham in midweek and said: "They will have a go. Villa have some good young players like Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young.

"So we have some issues to deal with here as they have good experienced players as well. It is a good mix."

New England coach Fabio Capello will be attending the game amidst reports he could pick Agbonlahor for the friendly international with Switzerland on February 6.

Villa skipper Gareth Barry is hoping the Academy product will not be affected by the hype and speculation.

He said: "Gabby will be aware of what has been said. It was on TV. Gabby's character is not really to worry too much. That is why I am hopeful he can deal with it."
